Lommán’s Bonanza of Backgrounds (FC)


Lommán’s Bonanza of Backgrounds is originally a collection of backgrounds for Fifth Edition, but they are equally suitable conceptually for a Fantasy Craft game of similar themes…possibly even moreso due to Fantasy Craft’s higher resolution of non-combat rules. What follows are the backgrounds from Lommán’s Bonanza converted into Specialties for use in Fantasy Craft, added here as they become publicly available through Patreon contributions.

New Specialties:

Elementclad Mystic

Nature never did betray
The Heart that Loved her.

  • Bonus Feat: Either Elemental Heritage or Pathfinder Basics (Any)
  • Attribute Training: The lower of your Constitution or Wisdom scores increases by 1 (your choice if a tie). Apply this bonus after any modifiers from your Species or Talent.
  • Primal Endurance: When you are wearing no armor (or only Thick Hide), you gain Cold Resistance 5, Heat Resistance 5, and Weather Resistance 5.
  • Turning: Choose a Type from the following list: animal, beast, construct, elemental, fey, horror, ooze, outsider, plant, spirit, or undead. Once per combat you may Turn characters of this Type (see FC, page 223).

Feral

In all the jungle there is none so great.

  • Bonus Feat: Two-Hit Combo
  • Animal Empathy: The Dispositions of non-adversary animals increase by 5.
  • Natural Attack: You gain your choice of one natural attack (see FC, page 235) from the following list: Bite I, Claw I, Kick I, Slam I, or Squeeze I. If you gain a natural attack from multiple sources, the attack’s grade becomes equal to the highest single grade + 1 per additional benefit granting the same attack, to a maximum of V (e.g. Bite IV, Bite III, and Bite I become Bite V).
  • Red in Tooth and Claw: If you are wearing no armor or partial armor, you ignore the penalty from the Two-Hit Combo feat and the penalty from the Warrior’s Grace feat is reduced to -2.
  • Thick Hide 2: You are considered to be wearing partial armor that provides Damage Reduction 2. This DR does not stack with other armor (only the best protection applies). If you gain thick hide from multiple sources, your hide offers the highest single DR value + 1 per additional hide benefit (e.g. thick hide 4, thick hide 3, and thick hide 1 offer DR 6).

Gymnosophist

He that is proud of the rustling of his silks…laughs at the ratling of his fetters.

Requirements: Alignment

  • Bonus Feat: Blessed
  • Glory-Bound: You may purchase Heroic Renown for 20 Reputation per rank.
  • Odd Jobs: You gain a +4 morale bonus with Downtime checks made to earn income.
  • Practiced Resolve: If you spend an action die to boost a Resolve check and it still fails, you gain the die back after the action is resolved. Against multiple targets you only regain the die if the check fails against all of them.
  • Thick Hide 2: You are considered to be wearing partial armor that provides Damage Reduction 2. This DR does not stack with other armor (only the best protection applies). If you gain thick hide from multiple sources, your hide offers the highest single DR value + 1 per additional hide benefit (e.g. thick hide 4, thick hide 3, and thick hide 1 offer DR 6).

Hedonist

Party ’til the sun comes up.

  • Bonus Feat: Great Fortitude
  • Beguiling: When you successfully Taunt a character, you may decline the standard result to have your target become fixated on you for 1d6 rounds. Special characters and villains may spend 1 action die to cancel this effect and become immune to this ability for the rest of the scene. If you gain this benefit from multiple sources, you may also damage the target once without interrupting his fixation (you may do this only once, no matter how many times you gain the benefit).
  • Encouragement: Once per scene, you may speak to 1 of your teammates for 1 minute to grant them a +1 morale bonus with saving throws until the end of the current scene.
  • “Special” Discount: You gain a 50% discount when purchasing Food & Drink, drugs, Carousing services, or Lodging (if you already possess a discount with these purchases, it increases by 5%).
  • Thick Hide 3: You’re considered to be wearing partial armor that provides Damage Reduction 3. This DR does not stack with other armor (only the best protection applies). If you gain thick hide from multiple sources, your hide offers the highest single DR value + 1 per additional hide benefit (e.g. thick hide 4, thick hide 3, and thick hide 1 offer DR 6).

Hexbared

You are subject to a curse that prevents you from wearing clothing, but you’ve made the most of what fate has given you.

  • Bonus Feat: Fortune’s Fool
  • Armorless Defense: As long as you are not wearing moderate or full armor, your defense increases by 2. However, if you are wearing moderate or full armor, you receive a -2 penalty on Acrobatics, Athletics, and Sneak checks.
  • Engaging Diversion: You may distract up to 3 opponents at once. You roll only once for the action, while each opponent rolls to resist separately. If you gain this ability from two or more sources, the number of opponents you may target increases by 1 for each additional engaging diversion ability.
  • Inquisitive Mind: You gain 2 additional Interests.
  • Tenacious Spirit: You gain 1 additional vitality point at each Career level.
  • Laid Bare: Your nudity means you have to be especially clever or skilled to excel in subterfuge that typically utilizes clothing. The cost for you to confirm critical successes on Blend, Disguise, and Prestidigitation checks is increased by 1 action die.

Nu Vivant

The confidence not to hide one’s body is the ultimate fashion statements.

  • Bonus Feat: Comely
  • Charming: Once per session, you may improve the Disposition of any 1 non-adversary NPC by 5.
  • Natural Elegance: Your Appearacne bonus increases by +1.
  • Noble Blood: You may purchase Noble Renown for 20 Reputation per rank.
  • Paired Skills: Each time you gain ranks in the Resolve skill, you gain equal ranks in the Impress skill. This may not increase your Impress skill beyond its maximum rank.

Packmate

We be of one blood, ye and I.

Requirements: Player character only

  • Bonus Feat: Animal Partner
  • Boon Companion: The maximum XP value of your Animal Partner is increased by +10 xp.
  • Encouragement: Once per scene, you may speak to 1 of your teammates for 1 minute to grant them a +1 morale bonus with saving throws until the end of the current scene.
  • In Your Element: Choose a terrain: aquatic, arctic, caverns/mountains, desert, forest/jungle, indoors/settled, plains, or swamp. You gain a +5 gear bonus with Impress checks while in that terrain.
  • Nimble Defense: If you are wearing no armor or partial armor, your base defense increases by 2.

Quintessent

When you unify mind and body, weapons and armor become superfluous.

Requirements: Special character only

  • Bonus Feat: Qi Basics
  • Unarmed Forte: You gain the Unarmed proficiency and forte.
  • Enhanced Metabolism: You require only one common meal per day and only half as much fluids as normal, but you may benefit from one additional food and one additional drink each day.
  • Inquisitive Mind: You gain 2 additional Interests.
  • Thick Hide 2: You are considered to be wearing partial armor that provides Damage Reduction 2. This DR does not stack with other armor (only the best protection applies). If you gain thick hide from multiple sources, your hide offers the highest single DR value + 1 per additional hide benefit (e.g. thick hide 4, thick hide 3, and thick hide 1 offer DR 6).

Saint of Beauty

Be a constant outrage to modesty. There is nothing to fear.

Requirements: Alignment with Path of Beauty

  • Bonus Feat: Unearthly Splendor
  • Celebrated: Your Legend increases by 2.
  • Encouragement: Once per scene, you may speak to 1 of your teammates for 1 minute to grant them a +1 morale bonus with saving throws until the end of the current scene.
  • Practiced impress: If you spend an action die to boost an Impress check and it still fails, you gain the die back after the action is resolved. Against multiple targets you only regain the die if the check fails against all of them.
  • Style Expert: You’re considered to have 2 additional Style feats for any ability based on the number of Style feats you have.

Streaker

Get Naked!

  • Bonus Feat: Pathfinder Basics (Indoors/Settled)
  • Agile Defense: Your base Defense increases by 1.
  • Beguiling: When you successfully Taunt a character, you may decline the standard result to have your target become fixated on you for 1d6 rounds. Special characters and villains may spend 1 action die to cancel this effect and become immune to this ability for the rest of the scene. If you gain this benefit from multiple sources, you may also damage the target once without interrupting his fixation (you may do this only once, no matter how many times you gain the benefit).
  • Flashy: Your Panache rises by 2.
  • Salacious Bearing: You gain a +1 bonus to all Athletics, Impress, and Resolve checks while you are undressed.

Trickster Bait

A small swarm of pixies, imps, magical hands, spirits, or other mischief-makers follow you and frequently prank you with wardrobe malfunctions and other such lewd public embarrassments, but also bring you trinkets and do small favors for you on occasion.

  • Bonus Feat: Fan Service
  • A Little Help: You can Handle Items and make Stash checks within 10 ft.
  • Charming: Once per session, you may improve the Disposition of any 1 non-adversary NPC by 5.
  • Flashy: Your Panache rises by 2.
  • Free Hint: Once per session, you may request a free hint from the GM. If they refuse, you gain 1 bonus action die.
  • Odd Jobs: You gain a +4 morale bonus with Downtime checks made to earn income.

Weaveclothed

Sorcery of the Skin

  • Bonus Feat: Spell Power
  • Warp and Weft: You are always considered to have a mage’s pouch.
  • Free Hint: Once per session, you may request a free hint from the GM. If they refuse, you gain 1 bonus action die.
  • Paired Skills: Each time you gain ranks in the Spellcasting skill, you gain equal ranks in the Impress skill. This may not increase your Impress skill beyond its maximum rank.
  • Attuned Skin: You gain a +2 bonus to all Impress, Notice, and Spellcasting checks while you are undressed.
